Medina County community
During 1990 and 2000, Medina County remained one of the fastest growing counties; however, most Medina County residents lived more than 30 minutes from a higher education facility. As a result, in 2001, the business, education and community leaders of Medina County partnered with The University of Akron (UA) to establish a flexible and responsive educational facility focusing on the evolving needs of technology-driven businesses and industry clusters of Northeast Ohio by forming the University of Akron Medina Task Force. From 2001 until 2006, the task force accomplished:
- Corporate and private contributions totaling $1.285 million
- 116 acres of gifted property from the Medina County Commissioners including 55 acres to the development of UA Medina and 61 acres for development of a technology park called Innovation Park
- Federal and state grants and appropriations totaling $8.15 million
This collaboration between UA and the Medina County leaders resulted in a 33,000 square foot state of the art building created to provide educational opportunities to the residents and businesses of Medina County and Northeast Ohio. Today, members of the Strategic Advisory Council (SAC) continue to work with and advise the UA Medina campus. See the SAC members list for more information.
