Biography

Camelly Cruz-Martes, Ph. D., is a Spanish Assistant Professor of Instruction and Interim Chair of the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Akron. She has twenty-your years of experience teaching Spanish, including at Malone University, Mount Union University, and sixteen years at Walsh University. While at Walsh she developed and taught a variety of Spanish language and culture courses at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels, including Spanish for Health Care Professionals, and she created a curriculum for a minor and major for Spanish for Healthcare. She earned her BA at the University of Puerto Rico, and completed her doctorate from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She has worked in literacy efforts in educational and recreational programs for Hispanic children in Akron, Hartville, and Canton, as well as in Guatemala. She has organized and participated in service-learning community programs for Latino families in El Salvador, Washington DC, and Youngstown, Ohio, and health missions in Nicaragua.

Her research interests include Latin American literature, Cuban poetry, migrant narratives, and the narratives of pain and disease in various works, including those of Julio Cortázar, Frida Kahlo, and Reinaldo Arenas. She edited Autoepitaph: Selected Poems of Reinaldo Arenas, published by the University of Florida Press in 2014 and longlisted for the 2015 PEN Award for Poetry in Translation. Also, she is interested in the fields of medical humanities, disability studies, human rights, trauma-informed pedagogy, and anti-oppressive education.
