Dear Members of The University of Akron Community,

Each year our nation pauses to celebrate the life and legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. As we remember this remarkable leader today, in a time of great uncertainty and division in our country, let us reflect upon the power of his message of love and non-violence.

For, as Rev. King so memorably put it: "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

As a University community, let us embody these wise words as we undertake our responsibilities as citizens, administrators, teachers and learners. Let us reflect on how each of us can drive out darkness and hate from our lives.

Indeed, it is up to us, at this critical juncture of our nation’s history, to come together as one united people to build a better and more peaceful world for ourselves and future generations.

As I did last spring, in response to rising racial tensions, I ask all members of the Zips family to reflect on how each of us can help create that better world, about which Rev. King famously dreamed.

Sincerely,

Signature of Dr. Gary L. Miller, president of The University of Akron
