Biography

Dr. Nofziger earned her PhD at the University of Arizona. Prior to joining the faculty at The University of Akron in 2003, she was an Assistant Professor at Kansas State University.

My research focuses on control theories in criminology with a primary focus on testing the claims made by Gottfredson and Hirschi in their General Theory of Crime. In my work I have tested every key component of self-control theory. I have demonstrated that self-control is generalizable to a wide range of behaviors, ranging from bingo playing and school violence to victimization. I forwarded a reinterpretation of the concept of relative stability and found that differences in deviant behavior between individuals with low and high self-control persist over the life course.  I found that opportunity to engage in crime is predicted by self-control and mediates the effects of self-control on behaviors. I have also provided evidence that parental self-control and parenting practices are fundamental in the development of self-control.

My second research area has been to examine how gender identity serves as a risk or protective factor for involvement in deviant behavior. I have emphasized the idea that masculine and feminine identities, rather than sex differences, serve as risk and protective factors for offending and can be used to explain this gap. My work has examined the role of social expectations associated with each sex, and the degree to which individuals internalize these as part of their gender identities. These internalized identities in turn lead to differential involvement in criminal behaviors.

I am currently working with colleagues in the Department of Sociology to better understand both the mental health of our students and to determine what career-ready skills students gain from our courses.
