University Managed Financial Aid

The Speech-Language Pathology faculty considers admission ranking (academic record, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, etc.) to make final decisions regarding the awarding of scholarships and other funding. There is no application process. 

The Andrea M. Hamer Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to honor the life of the late daughter of Donna J. and John K. Sparling to students in the speech-language pathology graduate program. Andrea was a 2007 graduate of the program who looked to use her degree to help others. She is remembered as a person with a wonderful smile who would do anything for anybody. First preference will be given to non-traditional students pursuing their Master’s Degree in Speech Language Pathology who have a demonstrated financial need.

Mary Coates Longerich Scholarship was established in 1987, and it is awarded annually to a deserving student majoring in speech-language pathology.

The Charlotte Essner Fellowship in Speech-Language Pathology was established to provide financial assistance to students who are academically talented. Mrs. Essner is associate professor emeritus in the School of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. She taught speech language pathology at the University of Akron from 1965 until her retirement in 1982.

The Dr. Yvonne M. Gillette and David S. Lathrop Fellowship in Speech-Language Pathology was established in 2014 to support a two-year fellowship for a student with aspirations to achieve excellence in the area of augmentative- alternative communication (AAC).  The AAC Clinical Fellowship provides a stipend for year one of the fellow’s graduate program and will continue in year two contingent upon successful completion of the year one fellowship activities. Fellowship experiences, totaling up to 10 hours per week during the academic year, should include  1)practice management activities that assist supervisors in the AAC Clinic,  2)instructional support assisting the  instructor  of the online and live graduate course in AAC,  3)technical support to students during hands-on learning experiences,  4)technical support for devices such as on-line and phone support from manufacturers, 5)participation in research projects, and  6) other related clinical learning experiences. In addition, at least two clinical rotations of AAC evaluation and intervention experience will be provided.

Other Funding

Training opportunities for clinical specialization are also available from the School of Speech-Language Pathology. These vary depending upon funding obtained by the faculty to conduct research, development, and training activities. Quota International of Massillon Scholarship

Quota International, Inc. is a service organization whose primary area of service is to people with speech and hearing impairments.  Quota International of Massillon offer two scholarships, each of which will be given to a student who is either deaf/hearing impaired, or who is pursuing a career in the field of speech and hearing or deaf education. Sertoma Scholarships

Sertoma International, an international volunteer service organization, whose mission and passion "is to improve the quality of life for those at risk or impacted by hearing loss through education and support."  Sertoma's Communicative Disorders Scholarship, funded by the Sertoma Annual Fund, is for graduate students pursuing advanced degrees in audiology or speech-language pathology from institutions in the U.S. These scholarships, worth $1,000 each, are awarded in the spring to help offset the cost of tuition, books and fees incurred during the following school year.  For more information: http://sertoma.org/what-we-do/scholarships. 

AMBUCS Scholarships

AMBUCS offers scholarships to students (U.S. citizens) in their junior/senior year in a bachelor’s degree program, or a graduate program leading to a master’s or doctoral degree. Awards range from $500 to $1,500 annually. There is one two-year award in the amount of $6,000. Award monies are deposited each semester to the student’s credit account with the financial aid office of the educational institution. Deadline for this application is April 15.
