Biography

As a speech-language pathologist, certified auditory-verbal therapist, and researcher, I’m primarily interested in the listening and spoken language development of young children with hearing loss. To be successful, these children need early identification and diagnosis, the use of advanced hearing technology (i.e., digital hearing aids, cochlear implants, FM systems), early intervention, and the active involvement of their parents or caregivers – if they are going to develop their communication to the fullest. Within this clinical area, I’m also interested in how families receive services. That is, can some listening and spoken language services be delivered through a telepractice or “teleintervention” model? I wish to learn more about how videoconferencing hardware and software can be further utilized to meet the needs of children with hearing loss and their families. To focus on this research, the Telepractice and eLearning Lab (TeLL) was developed in February 2012 to evaluate a range of telepractice service delivery models, especially those to families of young children with hearing loss and adults who are living with deafness.

And finally, I am passionate about training others. I want future speech-language pathologists to have the necessary knowledge and skills to support listening and spoken language in children with hearing loss. To support this effort, a personnel preparation grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Education in the fall of 2012 to establish the Graduate Consortium in Listening and Spoken Language. Through this consortium, graduate students in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Akron and at the University of Toledo are able to complete additional coursework and practica that support listening and spoken language in young children with hearing loss.

I also want professionals who are currently working in the field of deafness to have these same skills. Through inservice training, mentoring, workshops, and conferences, I enjoy sharing my experiences and helping others maximize their potential.


Background

Prior to joining the faculty at The University of Akron, I was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education at Utah State University (2007-2011). I am also the former Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) (2002-2007) of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing (AG Bell) in Washington, DC. With members in 30 chapters throughout the United States and 50 affiliates in 28 countries, AG Bell is recognized as the world’s leading organization promoting auditory learning and spoken language for individuals with hearing loss.

As a speech-language pathologist, I have served children with hearing loss in residential, public school, and clinical settings. I’ve also held positions as a cochlear implant program director, researcher, consultant, non-profit administrator, and faculty member and continue to hold adjunct appointments at universities in the United States and Australia.
