Biography

James T. (“Jim”) McHugh is Professor of Political Science and specializes in political thought, public law, comparative politics, and other areas. He also is a Fellow and Director of Academic Planning for the university's Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics. In addition to the University of Akron, he has taught at Roosevelt University in Chicago, American University in Washington, DC, the University of Vermont, and he has served as a Public Policy Scholar for the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, DC and Fulbright Distinguished Chair in North American Integration at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He has published several books and articles and his recent publications include a book on the reform of the Canadian Senate.

Jim McHugh is a fourth-generation native of Vermont and has a strong devotion to his native state and native region of New England. His scholarship focuses upon political philosophy, public law, and comparative politics, particularly the study of Canada and North America. He formerly served as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Association for Canadian Studies in the United States and is the Editor-in-Chief of The New England Journal of Political Science. He is a percussionist with experience in both rock and classical music. He loves to play music, basketball, and poker but not necessarily in that order. With apologies to all of the Cavaliers fans in the area, he also is a die-hard supporter of the Boston Celtics.
