DANCE PROGRAM
Explore the UA Dance Program
The University of Akron Dance Program offers students traditional technical training combined with an academic program leading to a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree in Dance or Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Dance with a Business Cognate. A minor in dance is also available.
The UA Dance Program prepares students for:
- performing careers
- teaching careers
- graduate studies in fields related to dance such as arts administration (available at The University of Akron School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration), physical therapy, dance therapy, dance history, dance ethnology, or dance education
Dance Program credit and time policy
In the dance program, lecture courses meet for 50-minute per credit hour each week for 15 weeks, with the expectation of two hours of work per credit outside of class. Majors level dance technique classes meet for a minimum of 100-minute per credit hour each week for 15 weeks.

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Dance with Business Cognate
This B.A. degree is designed to offer students a broad learning experience in dance, including ballet, modern, tap, and jazz, ballroom, and world dance forms supplemented by business studies. Core coursework includes choreography, dance history, pedagogy, and physical analysis. This program prepares students for dance studio management, graduate studies in the fields related to dance such as arts administration, dance history, physical therapy, dance, therapy, or dance ethnology, as well as teaching in private studios.

Dance Minor
The Dance Program offers a minor in dance for 20-21 credits. The curriculum includes study in dance techniques, World Dance/Ballroom Dance, Dance Somatics, in addition to dance history and electives such as choreography and Learning Theory for Dance.
