English Language Institute - Programs Overview
EAP - English for Academic Purposes
Students in the EAP program come from all over the world. Many are international students on F-1 student visas; some are U.S. citizens or permanent residents or visitors with a legal status to study at the institute full-time or part-time.
Full-time students in the EAP Program attend 18 hours of noncredit (not counting toward a degree) classes each week for 16 weeks in the Fall and Spring semesters. Part-time classes are offered during the 8-week summer session.
The ELI's English for Academic Purposes Program (EAP) serves two groups of people:
- Students who are preparing to enroll in a university degree program in the United States
- People who desire an intensive approach to language learning
What it consists of:
- Three levels of courses in listening, speaking, reading, and writing
- 4 contact hours each
- Workshops/Independent Study
- 2 contact hours each

Availability for Enrichment Workshop (ELI 96-901)
- Tuesday and Thursday from 3–4 p.m
Academic Tutoring
- Monday through Thursday from 10-3 and Fridays from 10-12 in 30-minute slots
Study Room
- Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

U-ADEPT Test
The University of Akron Developed English Proficiency Test: The U-ADEPT.
Constructed in 2004, The University of Akron Developed English Proficiency Test, or U-ADEPT, assesses the speaking ability of international teaching assistants at The University of Akron. Graduate students who pass the U-ADEPT are certified as proficient enough in spoken English to provide classroom-related services in their graduate departments.
- It is a 60-minute in person spoken English test.
- Graduate international students preparing to apply for teaching assistantship.

Summer Institute for Instructors
It is open to international instructors at:

In one- or two-week sessions, with two two-hour seminars per day, the summer institute for instructors provides professional development for:
- Instruction in English
- Publication in academic journals
- Disciplinary knowledge

Summer Institute for Students
This is a full immersion experience on an American university campus for English Language and academic growth.
In a one-week session, with two two 2-hour workshops per day, attendees can explore various academic disciplines.
It is open to international students at:
