Graduate study in chemistry

Chemistry at The University of Akron is one of the leading graduate degree programs at the University of Akron and we collaborate closely with other departments including Polymer Science, Engineering, and Biology. The graduate program typically enrolls approximately 40-60 graduate students, as well as postdoctoral and other visiting scientists, from around the country and the world. Our faculty consists of 13 tenured and tenure-track faculty, and many adjunct faculty from other departments and from off-campus contribute significantly to graduate level activities.

The department offers courses of study leading to the degree of Ph.D. in chemistry and also offers a M.S. with Thesis Option as well as M.S. Non-Thesis Option. Our graduate education strives to prepare students to be independent researcher and exposes them to advanced instrumentation and coursework that strengthens  communication skills.

Ph.D. students in our program in good academic standing are guaranteed financial support for five years in the form of either teaching or research assistantships for the academic year and the summer. In addition, their tuition is waived.

There is no financial support available for the Masters only students at this time. M.S. students must pay their own tuition on a per credit hour basis and are not eligible for teaching assistantships/fellowships.
