Tutoring & Assistance

If English is not your first language, you are an International Student, or if you are writing a thesis or dissertation, we are here to help. The English Language Institute offers individualized, one-on-one and small group assistance with coursework, as well as tutoring.

Appointments

Tutoring appointments are available most days of the week, depending on the instructors' schedules. For more information contact ua-eli@uakron.edu or call 330 972-7544. 

Services available

Thesis/dissertation support

  • An ESL specialist provides one-on-one assistance with organization, grammar and sentence structure, and idea development.
  • Open to students of all UA departments.
  • Students can sign up for a one-hour block of time, and may sign up as many times as the ELI schedule allows.

Essay writing and research reports

  • An ESL specialist provides one-on-one assistance with organization, grammar and sentence structure, and idea development.
  • Students can sign up for a one-hour block of time, and may sign up as many times as the ELI schedule allows.
  • Alternatively, if there is a group of 5-10 students in a class, the ELI can schedule a group appointment.

English language conversation

  • Do you want to practice conversational English? Or improve your pronunciation? Meet and converse with an ESL specialist.
  • Come with a friend, or on your own.

Study and reading help (for individuals or small groups from the same class)

  • An ESL specialist helps students study in English or for a specific test, etc.
  • Open to all students whose first language is not English, from all UA departments.
  • An ESL specialist helps students read through their assignments for a particular class – working with students to understand context, vocabulary, as well as how to skim/scan for important information.

Support for Teaching Assistants

  • The UA student prepares and practices a presentation that they would likely give as a teaching assistant. ESL instructor critiques the presenter with regards to pronunciation, fluency, presentation skills, etc. The student repeats the presentation with the instructor to practice the newly learned skills.
  • Open to UA students who are required to take the U-Adept Speaking test.
  • Come with a small group, or on your own.
  • Alternatively, TA candidates could be required to take, for example, five hours of English conversation practice.
    • five hours: conversation/social English sessions (30 min sessions)
    • five hours: academic/content-area English practice, and effective teaching strategies (30 min sessions).
