Adult Development and Aging
Coursework

Students admitted to the program are required to take approximately equal amounts of coursework at each institution. The coursework covers the areas of research methods/design, foundation courses in adult biobehavioral functioning, adult psychosocial functioning, and advanced research seminars. The doctoral degree will require a minimum of 90 credit hours of coursework comprised of 44 classroom hours from the following:

  • 3750:601 Psychological Research Using Quantitative and Computer Methods I (4 credits, Akron)
  • 3750:602 Psychological Research Using Quantitative and Computer Methods II (4 credits, Akron)
  • 3750:727 Psychology of Adulthood and Aging (4 credits, Cleveland State or Akron)
  • 3750:728 Social and Emotional Development across the Lifespan (4 credits, Akron)
  • 3750:729 Brain and Behavior in Adulthood (4 credits, Akron)
  • 3750:730 Health Psychology in Later Life (4 credits, Cleveland State)
  • 3750:733 Mental Health and Aging (4 credits, Cleveland State)
  • 3750:780 Graduate Seminar in Psychology: Teaching of Psychology (3 credits, Akron)
  • 3750:732 Cognitive Aging (4 credits, Cleveland State)
  • Choose one elective from 3750:734 Diversity Across the Lifespan (4 credits, Akron) or 3750:731 Sensorimotor Processes in Adulthood (4 credits, Cleveland State)
  • 3750:754 Research Methods in Psychology (4 credits, Akron, Language Requirement)
  • 3750:780 Graduate Seminar in Psychology: Multivariate & Computer Methods in Psychology (4 credits, Akron, Language Requirement)

    In addition, students will complete at least one thesis waiver credit hour, 12 dissertation credit hours, and 30 thesis/dissertation independent study credit hours (for a minimum total of 90 credit hours). An individual student’s point of entry into the program is at one of the two partner institutions.
