Law dean invited to meet with White House about Supreme Court nominee

On May 11, University of Akron School of Law Dean Matthew Wilson was one of approximately 25 guests of the White House in Washington, D.C., to participate in “Ohio Day at the White House: Supreme Court Nomination Process.”

The meetings focused on the institutional importance of a fully staffed Supreme Court, the “advice and consent” requirement in the Constitution, and preserving the functioning of our nation’s judicial branch by moving forward with the consideration of judicial appointments.

As the only representative from any law school, Wilson heard remarks from W. Neil Eggleston (counsel to the president and assistant to the president), Julie Rodriguez (special assistant to the president and senior deputy director of public engagement), Rakesh Kilaru (special assistant to the president and associate counsel to the president), and other White House staffers.

Other speakers included U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (Ohio’s Ninth Congressional District), Ohio Rep. Daniel Ramos (Lorain), and top congressional staffers. Wilson was able to share his thoughts, insights and suggestions about the importance of the constitutional nomination process, observance of established institutional traditions, and coming together as a nation to ensure fair and impartial courts.
