Dr. Chand Midha, who has been serving as interim dean of the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences and a longtime faculty member with a record of distinguished service and academic leadership, was appointed yesterday by UA’s Board of Trustees as dean of the college after an internal search.
“Dr. Midha’s commitment to academic excellence and his leadership skills have been assets to the college and University since he joined UA in 1983,” said Dr. W. Michael “Mike” Sherman, UA’s senior vice president, provost and chief operating officer. “I am confident that he will provide effective leadership as dean of the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences as well as continue to serve the Office of Academic Affairs in other capacities as we work together to achieve the goals of UA's Strategic Plan, Vision 2020.”
A professor of statistics, Midha’s distinguished record of service to the University includes holding positions as founding chair of the Department of Statistics, associate provost for academic and financial affairs and liaison to the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and Pharmacy (NEOUCOM). In 2004 he also received the highest honor of being elected Fellow of the American Statistical Association.
“The Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences provides the foundational liberal arts education necessary for all University of Akron students for their own enrichment and to prepare them for making positive contributions to society,” Midha said. “I look forward to working with faculty, staff and students in the college, with the other deans and administrators, and in particular with Provost Sherman and President Proenza, as we work together to collectively achieve the goals of the University’s Strategic Plan, Vision 2020.”
