Classes are back in session, the leaves are falling and the smell of pumpkin spice is in the air. These serve as reminders that the Nov. 3 election season is just around the corner. Although campus life looks a little different this year, The University of Akron is continuing to work with students to build awareness about the issues, candidates and the need for each individual to cast a vote.
Monday, Oct. 5, is the deadline to register to vote, and UA will host activities to bring about awareness and offer opportunities for unregistered voters to sign-up. Tomorrow, Sept. 22, is National Voter Registration Day and in addition to social media announcements and posters around the campus, the Jean Hower Taber Student Union will be abuzz with activities, including voter registration tables, trivia contests and a variety of other activities.
Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose will also visit campus on Wednesday, Sept. 23, to meet with President Gary L. Miller and student leaders at a roundtable to discuss the importance of student voting and share details of the voter registration initiative.
“It is so important that UA students participate in the voting process,” said Matt Akers, public liaison and assistant director of the Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics. “Election Day in 2020 will have a large impact on the future of our country at the federal, state and local levels. Every vote counts.”
Individuals who cannot make it to campus to participate in activities can register to vote online at voteohio.gov.
