The University of Akron's Concrete Canoe team placed 10th out of 23 in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 2011 National Concrete Canoe Competition held June 16-18 at the University of Evansville in Evansville, Ind. Here, students applied their knowledge, creativity and stamina while they showed the durabilty and versatlity of concrete as a building material, according to the ASCE.
This is the second year in a row that UA's Concrete Concrete Canoe team placed in the top 10 overall at the national competition. California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo placed first.

UA's team placed fourth in the "Final Product" competition of the overall contest. The Final Product contest rated entrants for their boat's aesthetics, display table and stands.
Concurrently, UA's co-ed sprint team placed 10th overall in the races. Coed sprint team members included Alex Maistros, Amanda Bossart, Theresa Teras and Cameron Carris.
"This year's concrete canoe team had an excellent year — once again winning our tough regional competition and placing among the top engineering schools from around the nation," says senior civil engineering student Daniel Bender, who served as 2011 team project engineer and co-captain of the 2010 team. "It was great to see the whole team work very hard throughout the year to achieve this great honor."
