Father and son duo become newest members of The Order of the Engineer
Brian and Jacob Wise received their rings together at this year’s Order of the Engineer ceremony.
On April 7, 2023, 116 students and one parent were inducted into The Order of the Engineer – an organization dedicated to fostering ethics and professionalism in the engineering profession.
At the ceremony, inductees pledged to uphold the standards and dignity of the engineering profession and to serve humanity by making efficient use of the world’s resources. They also received a stainless-steel ring, worn on the fifth finger of the working hand, as a reminder of their commitment to persist in their pursuit of excellence.
This year, a unique opportunity presented itself for father and son, Brian and Jacob Wise. Brian is an elected Ohio county engineer and a University of Akron (UA) civil engineering alumnus. Brian had his chance to participate in the ceremony this year and receive his ring just as Jacob earned his and launches his own engineering career upon graduation this spring with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.
“The fact that I get to share this honor with my son makes it even more enjoyable now,” said Brian. “There have been so many great memories that Jake and I now share thanks to the University: from several of the same core classes (and struggles) to even a few of the same professors, as well as favorite local hangouts.
“It was wonderful to see so many students participating in the ceremony, representing all the major engineering disciplines. Akron is now synonymous with engineering. When you tell people that you graduated from The University of Akron their next comment is invariably about how great an engineering school UA is. I cannot tell you how proud this makes me as an alumnus.”

The Order of the Engineer was initiated to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession, to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying the engineer. Every new member makes the obligation to uphold devotion to the standards and dignity of the engineering profession.
Congratulations to this year’s inductees and thanks to the College’s staff members who helped coordinate and facilitate this event.
