Ansel Adams expert speaking at UA in tandem with Massillon exhibition
The Myers School of Art at The University of Akron is partnering with the Massillon Museum to host a free lecture at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, by Mary Street Alinder, a leading expert on photographer Ansel Adams. The lecture will be in the auditorium of Folk Hall, 150 E. Exchange St., Akron, home of the UA Myers School of Art.
This is just one of the thousands of images Ansel Adams photographed over the course of his long career — Old Faithful in action at Yellowstone National Park.
Alinder is Ansel’s former chief assistant and author of "Group f.64, Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham and the Community of Artists Who Revolutionized American Photography (2014)," and "Ansel Adams: A Biography" (2014, new revised edition), and co-writer of the New York Times bestseller, "Ansel Adams: An Autobiography."
The lecture is in tandem with the Massillon Museum’s “Fragile Waters” exhibition now through Sept. 14. “Fragile Waters” is a powerful artistic and ecological statement through the inspiring black and white images of three renowned photographers and environmentalists: Ansel Adams, Ernest H. Brooks II and Dorothy Kerper Monnelly.
The traveling exhibition of 117 photographs, many not previously exhibited, takes viewers from the snowmelt of the High Sierras at an elevation of 12,000 feet elevation to far below the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean.
Alexandra Nicholis Coon, executive director of the Massillon Museum, observes that “Fragile Waters” invites audiences to connect with the beauty of water and to consider taking action to restore and conserve this critical resource.
