Martial arts master Gary Harris will lead t’ai chi 8 to 10 a.m., Monday, Sept. 29, to Thursday, Oct. 2. at Buchtel Common. He is pictured here at UA’s Confucius Institute China Week 2013.

A Chinese dragon race at the Sept. 27 Akron Marathon Kids Fun Run and morning t’ai chi at The University of Akron’s Buchtel Commons give just a couple of clues to what UA’s Confucius Institute has in store for its sixth annual China Week, Sept. 26 to Oct. 3.

In celebration of global connections and opportunities, China Week presents events on and off campus and is open to community members. Along with outdoor tai’ chi sessions and the Chinese dragon run, other events include:

  • Chinese kite flying demonstration on Sept. 29 at 5 p.m. behind Buchtel Hall
  • Panel discussions
  • Lectures, such as “How to Turn Study Abroad into a Career,” Oct 1, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Student Union
  • A performance by the Shanxi University Art Troupe on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. at E. J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall

In addition, UA alumnus Brandon Angus, director of correspondent and prime brokerage services for Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Financial Services LLC, will discuss China’s explosive lending growth as it leads to new avenues for the global market, Sept. 30, beginning at 5:10 p.m. in College of Business Administration 120.

"The speakers and performances are embedded in the curriculum, so China Week coordination begins a year in advance with each college and faculty member planning for topics and speakers that will extend their curriculum," says Holly Harris Bane, associate vice president for strategic initiatives and partnerships and director of the UA Confucius Institute.

As part of China Week and the UA Forum Lecture Series, novelist, travel writer, short-story writer and critic Paul Theroux will present the keynote address, “China — The Years Between Mao and Modernism,” Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m at Thomas Hall. Tickets, which range from $10 for general admission to $6 for students with a Zip Card, are available at uaevents.com.
