The University of Akron has long joined together with the greater Akron community to make the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day one that honors the slain civil rights leader as a “day on” rather than a “day off.”
For this year’s observance, on Monday, Jan. 18, UA will host its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Activities Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom, 382 Carroll St.
Children in grades K-12 and their families are invited to attend the free event.
Community and UA student organizations will provide activities and information to encourage nonviolence, civic responsibility, respect for differences and the importance of education.
The fair will include:
- Biographic information on Martin Luther King Jr.
- Historical information on the Civil Rights Movement
- Martin Luther King Jr. gallery and other visual displays
- Performances
- Arts and crafts
- Information about various organizations
Meanwhile, other UA students will join the United We Serve initiative — President Barack Obama’s national call to service — to volunteer at Haven of Rest Ministries, which aids the homeless. The morning of service is being organized by UA’s serveAkron, which matches students with volunteer opportunities and agencies on and off campus.
Parking for the Activities Fair is available at the meters outside the Student Union and in the nearby Schrank Hall parking decks.
