National Expert on Sexual Violence to Speak Feb. 18

Akron Law's Law Association for Women will host Claudia J. Bayliff, Esq, a nationally recognized expert on sexual violence, on Monday, Feb. 18. Bayliff is an attorney and educator with 24 years of experience working on issues related to sexual violence. She was also the first Chief of the U.S. Air Force's worldwide Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program

Bayliff will give two presentations, both in School of Law 165. The first, to be held at 12:15 p.m., is titled “Raped or 'Seduced'? How Language Helps Shape Our Response to Sexual Violence.” It will be an interactive session to explore the language of sexual assault: how we talk about and write about this crime. In addition, Bayliff will discuss specific examples of language we use and explore how to discuss sexual assault in a way that more accurately depicts the crime. Lunch will be provided for all those who RSVP online.

The second session, “The Justice Gap for Sexual Assault Victims: What Are We Going to Do to Close It?” will be held at 5:15 p.m. This interactive session will explore the concrete reasons why the “justice gap” for sexual assault victims exists. More importantly, participants will discuss specific recommendations about how to can work towards closing this gap. Food will be provided for all who RSVP. In addition, one hour of free continuing legal education credit (CLE) will be provided.
