To celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr., The University of Akron has scheduled a Martin Luther King Jr. Activities Fair on Monday, Jan. 21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Jean Hower Taber Student Union Ballroom.
This event enables the University and local community to utilize the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday as a “day on” rather than a “day off.” It also serves as an opportunity for community and University outreach. The celebration is organized by community and student organizations to appeal to audiences of all ages, and includes a variety of activities that encourage nonviolence, civic responsibility, respect for differences and the importance of education. This is an opportunity for students and the community to engage in the spirit and meaning of the holiday.
Activities will include:
- Biographic information on Martin Luther King Jr.
- Historical information on the Civil Rights Movement.
- Martin Luther King Jr. gallery and other visual displays.
- Performances.
- Arts and crafts.
- Information about various organizations.
Sponsored by the Office of Inclusion and Equity and hosted by the Office of Multicultural Development, the event will also include performances by selected local artists from ArtsNow and a performance by YEPAW – the Youth Excellence Performing Arts Workshop.
Parking is available at the meters outside the Student Union and in the Schrank Hall parking decks.
