The Buchtel College of Arts & Sciences is pleased to welcome nine new full-time faculty members for the 2022-2023 academic year.
Theron Brown
Assistant Professor of Practice, School of Music
Brown returns to BCAS to teach jazz piano performance after serving as adjunct professor of jazz studies at Kent State University. In addition to producing his own recordings and commissioned works, Brown has performed with the Cleveland Orchestra, Akron Symphony, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Brown is a current member of UA’s Arts Advancement Council.

Devon Carter, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Practice, Lebron James Family Foundation School of Education
In addition to his work as an autism clinic therapist at Lehigh University, Carter’s research focus includes racial diversity of evidence-based interventions for students with emotional and behavioral disorders, implementing peer-assisted learning strategies (PALS) with positive peer reporting (PPR) to increase academic engagement and decrease disruptive behavior.

Piya Chatterjee, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Practice, Lebron James Family Foundation School of Education
BCAS welcomes Chatterjee as a full-time faculty member after serving as assistant lecturer in the LJFF School of Education. Chatterjee worked for five years for Summit Education Initiative, honing her skills with experience in program assessment and evaluation, data collaboration, diving, and management.

Christopher J. Coles
Assistant Professor of Practice, School of Music
Coming to BCAS from Oberlin Conservatory where he served as visiting professor of jazz studies, Coles also served as adjunct lecturer here at UA and works with the Jazz Ensemble. In addition to his teaching and producing and recording his own works, Coles composes and plays saxophone with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra.

Shanon Donnelly, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Instruction, Department of Geosciences
Past UA students may have had Donnelly in classes in civil engineering, construction technology and surveying and mapping, in addition to biology and geosciences. Donnelly’s research areas include land-use and land-cover change in forested ecosystems, application of geospatial technologies in the study of social-ecological systems and spatial organization and landscape impacts of oil and gas drilling.

Scott Li, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, School of Communication
Li comes to BCAS from Pennsylvania State University, where he was an instructor in health communication while earning his Ph.D. Li’s research interests include interpersonal influence, health persuasion, and nutrition intervention for healthy eating and obesity prevention.

Kevin Moseby, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology
Moseby was an assistant professor in sociology at Drexel University before joining BCAS. His research interests are in biomedicine, health, race, and Black studies. At Drexel he was recognized for his student research mentorship and his work on campus in diversity, equity, and inclusion. He is currently an ad-hoc committee member on anti-racist action in the American Sociological Association section on science, knowledge and technology.

Wilfried Souly
Assistant Professor, School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration
Souly is a choreographer, dancer, and drummer originally from Burkina Faso in West Africa. He was trained in African traditional and contemporary dances, and focuses on making works that explore, expand, and explode Contemporary African Dance. Souly comes to BCAS from California, where in addition to his considerable accomplishments of choreography, collaboration, instruction, and artistic direction, he lectured at Worlds Arts and Cultures at UCLA.

J. Cherie Strachan, Ph.D.
Director, Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics
Professor, Department of Political Science
Before joining BCAS, Strachan served as associate executive director of community engagement in the Office of Institutional Equity, Effectiveness and Success at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, where she was also a professor of political science. Before that she held positions at Central Michigan University. Strachan’s political science research combines her interest in political participation, voluntary civic and political organizations, and political communication.
