‘Blood Wedding’ combines work of Federico Garcia Lorca and Langston Hughes

The University of Akron Theatre Arts Program presents “Blood Wedding” by Federico García Lorca, translated by Langston Hughes, and adapted by Melia Bensussen, with eight performances at Sandefur Theatre in Guzzetta Hall, 139 Buchtel Ave., Akron.

Directed by UA Theatre Professor James Slowiak, performances are Feb. 26-28 and March 5-7 at 7:30 p.m., and March 1 at 2 p.m. In addition, high school students registered for UA’s Spring 2015 High School Drama Day will attend a special matinee performance on March 7.

The large and diverse cast features UA theatre majors and other students, and alumni, as well as several students from Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts. UA Professor Adel A. Migid is creating a minimalist, surreal landscape which will provide a creative space for Adrienne Jones’ stylized costuming and Chris Hariasz’ evocative lighting.

The UA production will explore the relationship between writers Lorca and Hughes. Lorca, considered one of the foremost Spanish writers of the 20th century, was inspired by a true story of betrayal and vengeance to create the passionate and surreal play. Acclaimed American poet Langston Hughes, who was heavily involved in the Harlem Renaissance, was influenced by Lorca and translated the author’s “Gypsy Ballads” as well as “Blood Wedding.” 

Tickets for “Blood Wedding” are $12 general admission; $10 for seniors and UA faculty, staff and alumni; and $6 for students. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more. Guzzetta Hall is at 139 Buchtel Ave., Akron.
