Associate Professor of Instruction Diane Lorenzen (left) and Professor of Instruction Lisa Hart, D.N.P., in the School of Nursing, and Dr. Tim McCarragher, acting dean of the College of Health Professions, congratulated graduating nursing students as they drove through the Lot 39 parking deck to receive awards, licensing exam review materials and other goodies from School of Nursing faculty.
On May 1, the parking deck on Carroll Street was transformed into a stage of celebration with balloons, congratulatory signs and confetti for students graduating from The University of Akron’s School of Nursing.

As more than 100 students drove through the parking deck, they were met with faculty who presented them with awards, honor cords, review materials for the National Council Licensure Examination, T-shirts and cloth face masks. The seniors arriving in their cars formed a parade through the garage sharing their excitement with laughter and exclamations of joy.
Two awards were presented to graduating seniors:
- Allison Gavrilovic received the Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award, which goes to an academically outstanding senior student with significant contributions to campus, professional and/or community activities.
- Maria Frisone received the Mary Gladwin Award, which goes to a senior student who demonstrates achievement in academic nursing practice and school/community activity..
Organized by Dr. Michele Zelko, assistant director of undergraduate programs, and the Students Affairs Committee, the tradition of a “pinning ceremony” was transformed into a day of unique celebration. In lieu of offering a prepared speech, Dr. Tim McCarragher, acting dean of the College of Health Professions, instead offered individual congratulations.
