‘From the Vault: 40 Years of Excellence at Emily Davis Gallery’
Selected artworks from the 40-year collection of The University of Akron’s Emily Davis Gallery will be on view Dec. 4, 2014, through Feb. 27, 2015 at the gallery in Folk Hall, home of UA’s Myers School of Art, 150 E. Exchange St., Akron.

“From the Vault” showcases some of the many treasures in the collection, from old favorites to new acquisitions, including a series of Warhol prints recently donated to UA by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
Presenting free exhibitions and lectures since opening in 1974, UA’s Emily Davis Gallery has an impressive history of exhibiting works by national and international contemporary artists. In addition to drawing visitors from the region, the gallery has played an important role in educating UA students about curating, installing and preserving artwork.
One of the works visitors will see is “Dog,” by Ohio artist Jack Earl, which was in one of the first exhibitions at the Emily Davis Gallery as part of the group show “Works in Clay" in 1976. Earl’s sculptures often depict Middle America with a balance of sensitivity and humor. Breakage to this piece, as seen in the detached tongue of the dog, occurred at the close of the exhibition. Because of the damage caused by a student helper, UA purchased the piece. Even with the breakage, the work retains its original humor and charm.
The exhibition’s opening reception is Thursday, Dec. 4, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Emily Davis Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with later hours on selected dates. The exhibition and parking are free. More information: 330-972-6030 or edgallery@uakron.edu.
