Green appointed dean of the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences

Dr. John C. Green, distinguished professor of political science, was appointed dean of the College of Buchtel Arts and Sciences today by The University of Akron Board of Trustees.

“We’re extremely excited about John Green’s willingness to become dean of the College of Arts and Sciences," said President Matthew J. Wilson. "John is a distinguished academic with exceptional leadership skills, and we look forward to his continued leadership in the college and in the University.”

The college is the largest and oldest degree-granting college at UA, and provides a wide array of bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs. It has 23 schools and departments, nine centers and institutes, and four special programs.

Green, who has been interim dean of the college since Oct. 14, 2015, had been serving as vice dean for humanities and social sciences, and chair of the Department of Political Science as well as continuing in his longtime role as director of the Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics.

Since shortly after joining UA in 1987, Green has been the director of the Bliss Institute, a bipartisan research and teaching institute dedicated to the nuts and bolts of practical politics. As a widely known observer of Ohio and national politics, he is frequently quoted in the national and state media.

Green also is a Senior Fellow with the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.

He is co-author of “The Bully Pulpit: The Politics of Protestant Clergy;” “Religion and the Culture Wars: Dispatches From the Front,” and “The Diminishing Divide: Religion’s Changing Role in American Politics.” In addition, he is co-editor of “The State of the Parties,” now in its 5th edition; “Multiparty Politics in America, and Financing the 1996 Election.”

Green earned a B.A. at the University of Colorado and a Ph.D. at Cornell University in 1983.
