The University of Akron today announced that it would begin the hiring process for 55 full-time faculty members – 18 tenure track positions, 33 non-tenure track positions and four open category positions; the open positions could be either tenure track or non-tenure track, depending on the result of the searches. In addition, the hiring of additional faculty members will be discussed with college deans and faculty leadership as part of the implementation of the colleges’ strategic plans.
This hiring initiative resulted from ongoing discussions by Provost Mike Sherman with college leadership, as well as the chair of the Faculty Senate and a department chairman who is a member of University Council’s Budget & Finance Committee.
President Scott Scarborough said, “The immediate hiring plans are targeted to achieve three objectives: enhance high quality undergraduate teaching with full-time faculty members; address management needs in Art; Dance, Theatre and Arts Administration; Communications; English; and Biology; and, provide full-time faculty to maintain accreditation in specialized areas, such as business and the health professions. Now that we have completed the University’s overall budget and are working on the implementation of the colleges’ strategic plans, we are able to make these critical hiring decisions.”
Additional requests for faculty positions will be discussed and decided as a result of planned meetings with the leadership of the colleges during the next two months (October and November) in the context of implementing the colleges’ strategic plans.
