Patent Law Expert to Speak on Whether Human Genes Are Patentable March 5
Professor Dan L. Burk, from University of California, Irvine School of Law, will visit The University of Akron School of Law on Tuesday, March 5 at 3 p.m. as part of the annual Albert and Vern Oldham Intellectual Property Law lecture series. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will take place at Akron Law, 150 University Ave., Room 152. One hour of free continuing legal education credit will be offered, and a reception will immediately follow the lecture.

Deputy Director of USPTO to Be Keynote Speaker at 15th Annual IP Symposium
In October 2011, the most significant changes to U.S. patent law since the Patent Act of 1836 were enacted into law with the “America Invents Act (AIA).” The Honorable Teresa S. Rea, deputy under secretary of commerce for Intellectual Property and deputy director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, will discuss the agency’s implementation of AIA at the 15th annual Richard C. Sughrue Symposium on Intellectual Property Law and Policy on Monday, March 4 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The symposium will be held at the John S. Knight Center in Akron and is co-sponsored by The University of Akron School of Law and Sughrue Mion PLLC law firm.

National Expert on Sexual Violence to Speak Feb. 18
Akron Law's Law Association for Women will host Claudia J. Bayliff, Esq, a nationally recognized expert on sexual violence, on Monday, Feb. 18. Bayliff is an attorney and educator with 24 years of experience working on issues related to sexual violence. She was also the first Chief of the U.S. Air Force's worldwide Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program.

Jim and Nancy Petro, authors of the book “False Justice – Eight Myths That Convict the Innocent,” will visit The University of Akron School of Law on Thursday, March 14 from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. for a lecture titled “How We Convict the Innocent (and How We Can Stop).”
