The University of Akron recycles a variety of reusable materials. The following is a brief description of the materials accepted and where the correct containers may be located.
Recycled Materials:
The University of Akron recycles plastic bottles and jugs, aluminum and steel cans, cardboard and paper products in its single-stream containers.
Other materials such as batteries, large amount of books, cardboard and chipboard, cell phones and other handheld devices, other electronics, ink jet and toner cartridges, large amounts of paper products including magazines, telephone books, and newspapers, ferrous and nonferrous metals, pallets, and wood, may be able to be recycled by request.
Plastic bottles and jugs containing food or beverages should be rinsed and placed into any single-stream containers. Single-stream recycling bins are conveniently located in most common spaces throughout UA's academic buildings and athletic complexes. In addition, there are two large front-end loading recycling dumpsters designated for plastic bottles and jugs, steel and aluminum cans, paper and cardboard, located in parking lot 23.
Glass bottles - The Materials Recovery Facility in Akron no longer accepts glass.
Large amounts of Paper, magazines, and newspaper should be placed into 95 gallon recycling totes designated for paper. These paper totes are emptied once a week on Wednesdays and are designed to capture paper waste associated with office complexes. Temporary totes can be provided by request.
Cell phones can be recycled by request. All cell phones are donated to local women's shelters.
Electronics and appliances may be recycled by request. However, if the items are surplus, then the correct disposal of surplus property documentation must be completed prior to pick-up.
Large amounts of Cardboard, both corrugated and chip board, may be placed in gay-lord boxes located at most buildings shipping/receiving entrances.
Ferrous and nonferrous metals may be placed in the appropriate container located in parking lot 23.
