Child & Family Development scholarships

Barbara N. Armstrong Scholarship

Graduate assistants in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences established this scholarship in 1981 in honor of Barbara N. Armstrong, Ph.D., professor of Family and Consumer Sciences and former head of the school. An outstanding teacher, deeply committed to the pursuit of knowledge, Dr. Armstrong is the rare teacher who can make learning fun and who gives her students gifts which will last a lifetime. The scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student (graduate preferred) seeking a degree in family development. Recipients of the award are determined by a committee in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences and the director of Student Financial Aid and Employment.

Claudia J. Bowers Scholarship in Family Studies

The Claudia J. Bowers Scholarship has been created to assist a deserving student in the Department of Child & Family Development who is pursuing a degree in Family Studies. The recipient will be selected annually by the director of the School of Family and Consumer Sciences based on academic standing, need for financial assistance, and volunteer involvement in community life. The scholarship is renewable annually.

Leona W. Farris Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the faculty of the School of Family and Consumer Sciences in 1987 in recognition of Leona W. Farris, Director of Community Involvement, who taught in the School for 20 years. The earnings from its endowed fund are to be used to encourage black university students majoring in Child & Family Development. A faculty committee will determine the recipient or recipients from black students with a high grade point average, a commitment to community service and financial need.

Fred A. Kronseder and Helen W. Kronseder Scholarship

Dr. Helen K. Cleminshaw established The Fred A. Kronseder and Helen W. Kronseder Scholarship in 1987 to encourage students in the joy of learning. The scholarship was given in honor of her parents who first taught her the joy of learning. The earnings from its endowed fund are used to provide scholarship assistance for deserving graduate or undergraduate students majoring in Child & Family Development. Recipients will be determined by a faculty committee with a preference for students with a high grade-point average and an interest in child development and/or family development.

Joyce A. Sullivan Award in Home Economics and Family Ecology

The faculty in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences and friends established this award in 1976 in horror of Dr. Joyce Sullivan, head of the school from 1968 to 1976. It is presented annually to an outstanding junior or senior majoring in Child and/or Family Development. The department faculty selects the recipient and determines the award amount.

Bernard Dean Scholarship in Family and Child Development

The Bernard Dean Scholarship in Family and Child Development was created in 2002 by Susan D. and David D. Witt to honor their fathers, Bernard Prebynski and Dean Witt. The scholarship will provide financial assistance to a Family Development or Child Development major in Child & Family Development. The recipient must have demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity, and will be asked to submit a short essay with the scholarship application describing how they meet this criterion, and explaining how the award will assist them in achieving their professional goals. The recipient will be selected by the Scholarship Committee of the Child & Family Development in coordination with Drs. Susan D. Witt and David D. Witt.
