Studying abroad can be an exciting and life changing experience for your student and it can be equally as exciting for you! We imagine you may have some different questions about studying abroad. Below we have a number of resources to help you understand what your student will need to prepare and some of the aspects of studying and living abroad that they might experience.
FERPA: About educational privacy : The University of Akron
Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), higher education institutions are limited in the information they can reveal about students. For additional information on how The University of Akron addresses your student's privacy, please visit our Office of General Counsel's website.
UA Scholarships, Grants & Loans
Generally speaking, UA scholarships are only applicable to some UA Faculty-Led programs as well as Exchange Programs. Grants and Loans are usually also applicable to these programs. Typically, only grants and loans are applicable to Third-Party Affiliate Programs. Financial Aid options for Direct Enroll vary by location. Students are encouraged to contact the office of student financial aid for consultation once they have been admitted to a study abroad program.
Study Abroad Grants & Scholarships
There are many opportunities for scholarships and grants to help your student study abroad. Check out our Financial Aid page for a list of some of the scholarships available. We also encourage students to search for additional scholarships that may not be included in our list.
Included on our Financial Aid page are scholarship opportunities provided through Third-Party Affiliate Programs. So, if your student is traveling through one of our affiliates, be sure to look into those opportunities.

Health and Safety Abroad
Be sure you and your student talk to your family's health professionals about their program abroad. This provides an opportunity for a physical check up, as well as a chance to address questions about allergies, foods, and medications, and mental and emotional themes.
