Class of 2019: New grad takes interest in culinary arts in new career direction
Jason Logan will be the student speaker at the Fall Commencement ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 2 p.m. in E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall. He is graduating with a B.S. in Food & Environmental Nutrition.
Hometown: Boston Township (between Cuyahoga Falls, Hudson, Stow and Peninsula), the majority of my time was spent in Hudson
High School: Hudson High School
How did you come to choose your major?
I initially wanted to study Exercise Science or Physical Therapy. I have a background in culinary arts, so when I had to declare, I went with Dietetics. Then, I finally switched to Food & Environmental Nutrition because of the hybrid nature of the curriculum (Business/Science).
What brought you to The University of Akron?
My sister and brother-in-law are both UA alumni, they showed me the ropes. Meeting up with them in between classes made the campus feel like home.
What’s next?
I am going to focus on finding work in my field.
Q: How are you going to spend your time between graduation and what’s next?
A: I am going to keep an open mind, put myself out there and remain actively engaged in the job search!
Q: What college experience contributed the most to your personal growth?
A: The whole semester of spring 2019. I was uncertain whether or not I was going to return, but I was welcomed with open arms when I did by the faculty and my peers. That semester also included the dairy farm tour, which 100% made college worth it. COWS RULE!
Q: Favorite campus activity?
A: Men’s and women’s soccer games.
Q: Where’s your favorite place on campus? Why?
A: Second floor of Schrank Hall South, specifically the nutrition center. It was my home away from home.
Q: What’s your advice to incoming freshmen?
A: Beat every deadline that you can. Know, with certainty, when you’re allowed to schedule classes and do so the minute you can (even if it’s midnight). If something comes up — and it will, trust me — an overwhelming majority of your professors are more understanding than you think, talk to them!
