Incoming Honors College class is 12 percent larger this year

Earlier today, hundreds of incoming first-year Honors College students walked from the North Quad to the Akron Civic Theatre in celebration of the start of their college experience and to participate in an Honors Leadership Summit event, part of the College of Business Administration’s Institute for Leadership Advancement.

Mark T. Smucker, president of the Consumer and Natural Foods Division of The J.M. Smucker Co., was the featured speaker at the Civic.

Prepared for success

The 2015 Honors entering student profile boasts tremendous academic credentials. As of Aug. 25:

• Average ACT: 28.4 (national average score is 21)
• Average high school GPA: 3.94
• Women: 272 or 43 percent
• Minorities: 57 or 8.9 percent
• 637 entering students for fall 2015
  • 12 percent increase in enrollment from fall 2014 (571)
  • 80 percent increase in enrollment from fall 2013 (354)

The Institute for Leadership Advancement was founded in 2012 from a generous $1 million gift from The J.M. Smucker Company. The program is designed to engage first-year Honors students in an intimate leadership learning community where students interact with high level executives, engage one another in group problem-solving, and develop personal visions while setting the foundation for a successful four years in college and beyond.
