Word Problem? No Problem!

On Feb 15, 2019, NE Ohio ACHIEVE grant trainee teachers, Marybeth Wampleman, Elaine Mullally, Tessa Lynch, and Co-PI Dr. Wei Zhang presented at the 2019 Multilingual Multicultural Conference “Breaking Through Academic Language Barriers” organized and sponsored by the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.

Their presentation “Word Problem? No Problem!” introduced a 7-step word problem solving model to break down the language and content demand of a math word problem. The three teachers shared their group project to tackle word problems for English learners as application of the 7-step word problem at the kindergarten level.

NE Ohio ACHIEVE is funded by a five-year National Professional Development grant awarded by U.S. Department of Education to the School of Education and the Department of English (in the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences).

The focus of the grant is on increasing the proficiency of teachers who work with English learners (ELs), particularly early childhood and elementary level teachers.

The grant objectives align with the following goals:

  • Improve effective instruction of ELs in NE Ohio by providing professional development focused on research-based literacy strategies to teachers and administrators;
  • Increase the number of in-service teachers who complete the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Endorsement; and
  • Improve relationships between schools and parents/families in select schools with high populations of ELs.
